Earlier this week the ACLU of Ohio, the League of Women Voters of Ohio, the Fair Elections Legal Network (FELN), and Bernie Sanders’ Presidential Campaign each took action against the Ohio Secretary of State for his attempts to restrict 17-year-old voting in that state’s March 15 presidential primary.

New Legislation in 13 States to Expand Use of Ranked Choice Voting in 2016

With a new year comes a new legislative session in state houses around the U.S. 2016 has seen state legislators nationwide use this opportunity to empower voters by introducing bills that create new uses of ranked choice voting (RCV) at the state and local levels. Just one month into this year’s session, at least 27 pro-RCV bills have been introduced in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

Last Tuesday, December 8th, the Supreme Court debated the issues of voting rights and redistricting as it heard the cases Harris v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission and Evenwel v. Abbott. While FairVote does not have an official position on either case, both of these have considerable potential to affect electoral reform and transform representation as we know it.

FairVote in the Supreme Court

This month, FairVote submitted amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) briefs along with the Center for Competitive Democracy in the Supreme Court for two cases. One concerns closed primaries in New Jersey; the other concerns the "top two" system in California. In both, FairVote hopes to inform the Court of the various options states have for primary election and ballot access reform, and how those choices can affect voters.
