On Election Day 2016, voters in Maine showed that they intend to live up to Maine’s motto: “Dirigo,” meaning “I lead.” In 2018, they will be the first state to use ranked choice voting in all state and congressional elections, notwithstanding doubts expressed in some post-election coverage.

This past Tuesday, Alaska took a massive step forward to ensuring that all of its citizens have access to the ballot box. Over 65% of Alaska voters approved Ballot Measure 1, which will implement automatic voter registration throughout the state. Clearly, Alaskan citizens understood the importance of enfranchising all of their community.

This year, overseas and military voters cast ranked choice voting ballots in five states. In fact, in advance of Louisiana’s 8:00 pm poll closing deadline this evening, thousands of ranked ballots will have been returned to the state’s election officials by military and overseas voters.
