FairVote's online spreadsheet with all the votes cast in major party presidential primaries and caucuses to date has been garnering attention from the campaigns and was featured yesterday in a Politifact analysis evaluating Hillary Clinton's claims about the popular vote. We've updated it with Wisconsin primary numbers. Despite big wins for Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have leads of more than 2.2 million votes, although but with big states still to come.
We saw another 2.58% of the Republican primary vote cast for withdrawn candidates — not as bad as in Arizona last month, but still a great example of how ranked choice voting would prevent inadvertent wasting of votes. Updating our recent analysis, the combined total in both primaries is now more than 640,000 votes cast for candidates after they withdrew.
