Statement by FairVote in Response to Introduction of John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
Takoma Park, MD; July 22, 2020 – FairVote, a nonpartisan organization that advocates for electoral reform in the United States, responded today to news that 48 Senators cosponsored the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This legislation would restore and modernize the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. FairVote’s statement is as follows:
“It is long overdue for Congress to revisit and modernize the Voting Rights Act, just as it did in 1982 and 2006. Our nation is stronger when its elections reflect the voices of all its people, no matter their race, ethnicity, gender, or class. FairVote supports this reform as an essential step towards stronger and more equitable elections.”
FairVote is a nonpartisan champion of electoral reforms that give voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a representative democracy that works for all Americans.
