In a June 21 episode called "We're Doing Elections Wrong" from Netflix’s “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj,” Minhaj takes a deep dive on the winner-take-all electoral system and endorses ranked choice voting as a long term solution to the problems of plurality rule and negative partisanship.
Minhaj artfully explains how most of our elections don’t actually require a majority to win. He argues these plurality wins make us “misunderstand the most basic principles of our democracy,” and that with a winner-take-all system, “Everything’s about who we hate, not who we like.”
Minhaj says that many of the problems that plague our democracy, including negative partisanship and worrying about wasting a vote, are symptoms of the winner-take-all system, but can all be fixed by adopting ranked choice voting (RCV).
Minhaj says RCV is great because “You can vote your conscience,” without having to worry about wasting your vote. He also highlights the positive campaigning that was born from Maine’s adoption of RCV.
We are excited to see the support from Hollywood for RCV, and we agree with Minhaj’s argument that “the most beautiful thing about ranked choice voting [is that] we can do it right now.”
