Fixing our broken political system might seem like a moonshot. But don’t forget, we made it to the moon. People’s faith in democracy can send us into orbit - in fact, it already has.
Democracy won big in 2018, with sweeping successes in ballot measures on electoral reform and voting rights.Meanwhile, Maine made history by becoming the first state in the nation to elect a U.S. Senator and two House members using ranked choice voting. The ranked choice voting revolution made headlines and won key endorsements from the likes of The New York Times, Economist and Washington Post.
Ranked choice voting can become the norm in the coming decade, effectively banishing “spoilers” from our vocabulary, empowering voters to embrace choice, and promoting a more civil, inclusive politics.
In tandem with the mainstreaming of ranked choice voting, we hope to capitalize on the remarkable success of redistricting reform by passing the Fair Representation Act in Congress. The Fair Representation Act’s winning combination of ranked choice voting with an American form of proportional representation has been lauded as the best way to ‘save America’ by conservative columnist David Brooks and liberal analyst Matt Yglesias, while the New York Times backed it with a full-page editorial.
These successes are worth a celebration. And they’re worth taking to the moon in the coming years - winning ranked choice voting for president and on down, in red states and blue, and truly transforming how we can engage with our leaders.
We want you to be there to hear our story, share your ideas and meet those leading the charge for change.
Please join us at the Google Community Space on December 10. Space is limited, but we want you there. We are asking participants to contribute toward FairVote's efforts to achieve our reform vision.
