FairVote began in 1992 with a handful reformers guided by a passionate belief that better elections are possible in America. American democracy is better due to our efforts, and now we’re poised to take things to a new level. For us, the challenges and opportunities of today mean we can achieve a vibrant, substantive, civil and representative democracy tomorrow.
FairVote’s mission is to be a nonpartisan champion of electoral reforms that give voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a representative democracy that works for all Americans. We’re a champion because of our dedication to change. We’re nonpartisan because we want to work with everyone ready to advance our values. Our values center what it means to live in a democracy that truly respects voters and honors the consent of the governed.
We think outside the box, trying to get to root causes and workable solutions. Our combination of policy insight and advocacy skills have moved ideas that today are winning in Republican and Democratic states alike, like automatic registration of eligible voters, 17-year-olds voting in primaries, and voter registration for 16-yearolds. We’ve helped launch ideas that to me today feel inevitable like extending voting rights to 16-year-olds in local elections, taking partisans out of redistricting, earning parity for women in elected office, and establishing the National Popular Vote interstate compact governing the Electoral College.
Today we prioritize ranked choice voting because of what we see as a once-in-a-century opportunity to win a reform that has a uniquely positive impact on core problems that plague our democracy. RCV already works well in more than a dozen American cities, most of which with our direct support. It is now poised for statewide use in Maine and adoption in more states.
Combined with multi-winner districts and independent commissions, ranked choice voting would truly end gerrymandering Introduced on the week of our 25th anniversary in Jun 2017, the Fair Representation Act shines a beacon on the way forward toward electing Congress with fairness, choice and incentives to govern more responsively. With it, every American will participate in elections that matter and earn a real chance to win a seat at the table.
It’s humbling to see how many people have part of FairVote’s movement and are with us today in greater numbers than ever before – with our dedicated staff, our committed Board, and our partners with whom we we work daily nationally and in states across the country. We expect to before long have a vibrant group in every single state seeking to realize our reform vision.
For us, the challenges and opportunities of today mean we can achieve a vibrant, substantive, civil and representative democracy tomorrow. We are thrilled to play our part in that progress.
