Celia Calhoun is the Partnerships and Executive Administration Intern. She graduated from Sidwell Friends High School in 2021 and is working at FairVote during her gap year. She is based in the DC Area and has always had an interest in studying politics and working in politics in the future. She is passionate about voter rights and is excited about the work she can be a part of with FairVote that will make our country’s political process more representative and appealing for all Americans.

Special elections cost time and money. RCV can help

This Election Day, three Congressional districts in Florida and Ohio conducted special elections to fill vacancies from legislators who were no longer filling their position. These elections would have been improved with ranked choice voting (RCV). Ranked choice voting eliminates the need for primaries and ensures winners have a mandate to govern their districts.

In the last few years, more and more cities have started to experiment with ranked choice voting in their municipal elections. This November, there will be a historic number of cities using RCV for their elections -- from mayor to city council to school board. In Utah alone this year, 23 cities chose to opt-in to an RCV pilot program.
