Carla has dedicated her career to developing projects, events, and organizations to fill open gaps, drive social change through inside/outside strategies, and encourage collaboration in the progressive movement. With expertise in communications, fundraising, crisis management, coalition building, and organizational development, she has advised clients in all areas of the political arena. She specializes in work with elected officials, grassroots and grasstops leaders, political philanthropists, and socially responsible business executives.
Currently, she assists FairVote with programmatic strategic advice and is crucial to our efforts to build new, diverse partnerships for the Catalytic Reform Project at both federal and state levels. Previously, she worked in-house as the State Communications Director for the AFL-CIO. She was responsible for creating and executing a symbiotic nationwide communications strategy between National AFL-CIO headquarters and its 50 independent State Federations and over 300 Central Labor Councils, 57 member organizations (representing 12.5 million individual union members), and hundreds of allied organizations. With her leadership, working people won victories such as stopping the massive Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement and preventing several states from enacting debilitating and deceptively-named "Right to Work'' laws.
She was a co-founder and the first Treasurer of Democracy Partners, a political consulting firm specializing in crafting and executing political strategies for progressive organizations, building progressive infrastructure, and developing the progressive narratives - such as the Progressive Economic Narrative that is still in use today. As a founding Board member of the Action Network, she helped devise its initial strategy and build-out. Similarly she played leadership roles in various U.S. House and Senate campaigns, most often among the first-hires. She recorded only one loss – the 2000 presidential race – when she worked at the Democratic National Committee as the Director of the Federal Victory Fund, the DNC’s inaugural Federal money fundraising program. and served as the Political Lead for Brevard County during the 2000 Florida Recount. Carla also helped found the DNC’s Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council.
