FairVote has conducted an analysis of all federal primary elections since 1994 and determined that they face decreased turnout, especially for people of color. Ranked choice voting is a potential solution.

Despite a setback this week, Caflifornia reformers have every reason to be optimistic about expanding RCV. A remarkable coalition effort involving major civil rights groups and thousands of grassroots activists came together to urge California Governor Gavin Newsom to allow general law cities and counties to join charter cities and counties in being able to adopt RCV.

On October 11, the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee unanimously approved proposals by state Democratic parties in Hawaii and Kansas to allow voters to cast ranked choice voting (RCV) ballots in their party-run presidential primaries. Learn more here.

12 US House members recently introduced the RCV Act, which would adopt RCV in all congressional elections by 2022. By ensuring majority support, eliminating vote-splitting, eradicating costly run-offs, incentivizing diverse 3rd-party perspectives, and encouraging positive campaigns, the RCV Act would make our system work better.
