Democrats Choose Fairfax County School Board Candidate with RCV

Posted on June 29, 2017

On Friday, the Fairfax County (Virginia) Democratic Party endorsed its nominee for an upcoming special election to fill an at-large position on the School Board. Democrats winnowed down the broad field of six candidates using ranked choice voting. In the final round, Karen Keys-Gamarra secured 250 out of the 430 votes cast, an outright majority. She now advances to the August 29 general election, where she will face Republican nominee Chris Grisafe.

This comes less than two months after neighboring Arlington County Democrats endorsed nominees for both County Board and School Board using ranked choice voting. The ACDC has used ranked choice voting since 2014, making it one of a number of local and state political parties, such as the Utah Republicans, that are using ranked ballots internally.
