Ranked choice voting special election coming to St. Paul

Voters in Minnesota’s state capital on will pick a new city council member for Ward 4 on Aug. 14 using ranked choice voting. The special election was called due to the departure of Russ Stark, who resigned earlier this year to work for St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter. Stark held the seat for nearly a decade.

Three candidates are vying to replace Stark. They are: Shirley Erstad, executive director of the Friends of the Parks and Trails of St. Paul and Ramsey County; David Martinez, a project consultant with the Minnesota Department of Transportation; and Mitra Nelson, a policy and outreach aide on immigration, refugee and public safety issues to Congressman Keith Ellison.
