Today, we could not decide on what to order and realizing that we are the voting system experts, we thought it would be great to cast votes before making any decision. Different systems can get different winners and this was a great opportunity to test their fairness and impact.

On March 14th and 21st, French voters elected their 26 regional councils. A main point of interest, beyond the results, is how the semi-proportional system used for the regional elections distorts the electoral dynamics, and how well represented women are.

Port Chester Will Use New Voting System

On June 15th, 2010 the Village of Port Chester, New York will become the first community in the state to elect its’ representative body through a semi-proportional system of elections known as “cumulative voting”. The village’s six seat Board of Trustees, as in the past, will be elected through an at-large election. Through cumulative voting, voters continue to have the same number of votes as seats, but will now have the freedom to distribute their votes as they please, including casting more than one vote for a favorite candidate.

Hollywood meets election reform as FairVote launches a new blog focused on the Academy Awards' new instant runoff voting system for Best Picture. "Oscar Votes 1-2-3" (http://oscarvotes123.com) is the nation's primary website to analyze the Oscars from the perspective of its newly-adopted preferential voting system for Best Picture. The site will also have information about the similar "choice voting" system of preferential voting used for decades for most Oscar nominations.
