Super Districts

Congressional redistricting for states is often controversial, with lines often drawn for partisan advantage and incumbent protection. The root of the problem is use of winner-take-all elections in single-member districts in which 51% of voters can elect 100% of representation. In 2011 FairVote is drawing alternative "super district" maps based on using proportional voting in larger districts with more than one representative. Our blog series shows how these alternative plans consistently would provide competitive voter choice for all voters in every election, fair representation for backers of both major parties and a better chance for independents, women and racial minorities.
