During Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent visit to the White House, the first for any Canadian Prime Minister in almost 20 years, he and President Obama both voiced support for continued efforts to combat climate change. These world leaders share another key point of policy agreement: Both are declared supporters of ranked choice voting (RCV). Moving away from first-past-the-post voting was a cornerstone of Trudeau’s platform in his most recent campaign, and he has pledged to consider a transition to either preferential voting or proportional representation in Canada. President Obama’s support for RCV stems back to his time as an Illinois state senator, when he introduced a bill to use RCV in primaries.
